The Principles Relating to Bid’ah
Introduction to Course
The Prophet sallalahu alayhe wasallam said “Every innovation is a misguidance…” and as Aysha radiyallahu anha reported he sallahu alayhe wassallam said “whoever introduces a new matter into our affair, it will be rejected.”
The Islamic concept of Bid’ah (Innovations) has become a common topic of conversation and controversy. Constant debates and arguments rage on what constitutes a bid’ah and are all bid’ahs a bad thing. Other questions include the concept of bid’ah hasanah, the understanding of the statement of Umar ibn Al-Khattab and the definition of bid’ah given by Imam Ash Shafiee – can there be a good bid’ah?
This Sabeel seminar takes a detailed look into the concept of bid’ah looking at its importance as an Islamic concept, establishing what constitutes a bid’ah in accordance to the definitions given by the scholars and examining the concept of bid’ah hasanah and other categorisations of bid’ah.
The seminar will also cover some case studies that will examine some common practices such as mawlid to examine if they are considered bid’ah and how we should deal with the people who practice bid’ah.
